What is self-persuasion?
Motivate people to persuade themselves to change behavior
What is cognitive dissonance?
When you say something that is counter to your own behavior
What is counter attitudinal advocacy?
try to convince others of something that you yourself do not even believe in
What happens when we are confronted with our own hypocricy?
Our self-concept is threatend
What is a narrative
Story that provides info. Has a clear beginning and end. and is often filled with a conflict that in the end has a solution.
Why are narratives a good motivational tool?
Because it often features compelling storylines and characters which people can identify with
What is the social cognitive theory?
We can learn from observing others. The way we apply it in the real world is mediated by outcome expectancies that we have seen before (in narrative)
What is the corralation between behavior and self efficiacy?
Preforming a certain behavior can raise self effiicacy, and higher levels of engagement can also lead to high self efficacy.
What does EORM stand for and what does it entail?
Entertainment Overcoming Resistance Model, It stands for how narrative entertainment messages help with overcoming resistance.
How will identification help with resistance
Indentification reduces counterarguing, as viewers are more focussed on the story, which will lead to less generation of counterarguments§
When is it best to use self persusasion?
When direct persuasion attempts are likely to fail
When important attitudes habits or lifestyle changes are at play
When groups do not need convincing, as they will not act upon it anyways
What are the levels of character involvement
- identification: you are that person
- Wishful identification: you look up to this person
- Precieved similarity: Triggered by similarities
