What is counterarguing?
A direct attack on message
What is attitude bolstring?
Come up with arguments that are in line with your own attitude
What is message distortion?
Interpet in such a way that is in line with you
What is selective exposure?
Not listening or leaving
What is Social validation?
Resisting a message by bringing other people into it
What is source derogation?
Insulting the source
What is negative affect?
Respond by getting upset or angry
What are assertions of confidence?
Standing your ground
What are the most used strategies when resisting a message?
Attitude bolstring and counterarguing
What is the most effective strategy for resisting persuasion?
Counterarguing
Why do health info in messages is least effective to the ones that need the info the most?
Because they feel like it does not apply to them or start coming up with arguments why this does not apply to them
How can we try to make health info in messages more effective?
By disclosing an good alternative
What is a self-threat?
When peoples’ views of themselves are challenged
Explain the cognitive dissonance theory
This theory entails the fact that our behavior is contrasted to the negative consequences. We try to relief ourselves from this dissonance to feel good again. They start to create beliefs that justify their own behavior
What are the 4 defensive strategies?
- Avoidance
- Denial > Refusing to accept what is said is true
- Supression > Hiding fear
- Cognitive reappraisal > Downplay threat
(e.g. ‘Enjoying a party is way more important then not drinking’)
