Lecture 7 - Considering Self Flashcards
The self is an evolving composite of:
- self-awareness
- self-concept
- self-esteem
Self-awareness
“To what extent I know about myself?”
-reduce blind and unknown self (Johari Window)
How can you increase self-awareness?
pay more attention to yourself, do reflections, and explore new things
Self-Concept
“Who am I?”
-it consists of your feelings and thoughts about your strength and weaknesses, your abilities and limitations, and your aspiration and worldview
Self-esteem
“Given who I am, what’s my evaluation of myself?”
-Self-discrepancy theory postulates three basic domains of the self: actual self, ought self, ideal self
- self-esteem = ought self-actual self
- self-esteem = ideal self-actual self566
Self-discrepance theory - three basic domains of the self (self-esteem)
- Actual self – who I really am
- Ought self - Expectations form others
- Ideal self – our own expectations toward ourself
The self
The self is an evolving (expanding identity) composite of self-awareness, self-concept, and self-esteem
The self - evolving
expanding identity
self-expansion theory
explains how identiy and close relationships influence each other. There are three primary predictions
Self-expansion theory - three primary predictions (self-identity)
- Humans have a motivation to self expand
- Self-expansion is often achieved through close relationships which allow the inclusion of the other in the self
- Mindfully seeking new and exciting possibilities with one’s partner can dramatically improve relationships.
