What is the difference between group entiativity vs. group identity? What is an example of a team that has group entiativity but not identity?
entiativity: belief by the people in a group that a group is a group or team
identity: belief by the people in a group that group membership is important to who they are self esteem
Code teams have entiativity but not identity
What 2 things determine the orientation of a team?
Orientation to task and orientation to social climate
Teams w/high orientation to task but low orientation to social climate is a coldly efficient team (not stable)
Teams with high orientation to social climate but low to task is a comfortable team (unstable over time)
High to task, high to climate-> stable and functional over time
Low to task, low to climate–> dysfunctional
What’s involved in team collaboration?
People treat each other w/respect and value each other’s opinions
actively work on conflicts as they arise
evidence that each person is collaborating and being efficient
What’s involved in management of the team?
- enjoyment of work
- good social climate

- support from larger organization
What are some hazards facing teams?
- failure to hold meetings -> disorganization
- working as a completely virtual team -> no sense of purpose
- marginalizing junior members
- generating fear suppressing new ideas
- reaching consensus prematurely -> impatience & not deliberating enough
