lecture 7 Flashcards
mechanism of action of benzodiazepines:
binds at the interface of the GABA receptor and leads to a reduction in neuronal excitability by inhibiting nerve transmission resulting in a calming effect
drug self administration:
experimental method used with animals to identify if a substance has positive reinforcing effects. animals press a lever a set number of times resulting in the administration of a drug. if administration of a drug is reinforcing, an animal will work for more administration
benzos are in schedule:
- low potential for abuse and low risk of dependence
drug discrimination:
experimental method in which animals identify whether a drug produces physical or behavioral effects similar to those produced by another drug with known pharmacological properties
benzos substitute for one another in:
drug discrimination research similarly in their subjective effects profile
associated problems with prescribing benzos and opioids:
increased risk of fatal overdose, increased risk of suicide, poorer treatment effectiveness/commitment
boxed warnings:
highest safety-related warning for medications regarding combining the drugs and risk of respiratory distress, coma, and death
serious withdrawal symptoms onset:
as early as days to weeks some symptoms lasting months/years
disorder for not being able to quit benzos or opioids:
sedative, hypnotic, and anxiolytic use disorder
in 2020 FDS decided to ass additional boxed warnings including risks of:
addiction, severe and dangerous withdrawal symptoms
duration of bentos is recommended for:
short term use
why are people using benzos for other reason than medically?
relax or relieve tension, help with sleep, get high, help with emotions. many for life related stressors
symptoms of long term effects of bentos:

reasons for benzodiazepines prescription:
situation anxiety/anxiety, insomnia, digestive, stomach/gut issues, restlessness (95%), muscle spasm, pain, nerve spasms
treatment for benzodiazepines addiction:
motivational interviewing, coping skills, stress management, support groups, CBT
