Lecture 7 Flashcards
Construct validity
Not whether a construct invalid, we assume they are defined.
Construct validity is our imagination ability to capture a theoretical meaning of a construct,
First proposal part
Problem indications, gradually narrowing down and leading to the problem statement, derive research questions, all in the same direction.
Making a study interesting
Integrate two theories to examine a phenomenon
Or examine both sides of the coin, the good and the bad
Conceptual research
no data usage gives arguments and logical reasoning
Empirical research
Using data quantitative or qualitative or both (mixed methods)
Meta-analysis
Using past studies of literature as data. ‘analysis of analyses’
Simulation
using computer-generated data
Quantitative research develop through theory (deductive hypothesis testing), leading to observations and statistical confirmation
…..
Exploratory research
Research without hypothesis
Qualitative research
Initial conceptual framework is very helpful + grounded theory research
Concept validity
How far are constructs of theoretical interest successfully operationalized ( Am I measuring what I claim to be measuring)
Internal validity
To what extent does the research design permit to claim x causes y ( are you sure that x causes y)
Due to
- spurious relationships: other factors that exist
- reverse causality
External validity
Can findings be generalized to other settings (pops, places times)?
This is an analytical issue
Statistical generalization validity
How far is the relationship observed on the sample a correct estimate of the relationship in the target population?
Hypothesis
Statement about what is expected to occur ( not why!)
Propositions involve concepts/constructs, hypotheses measures/variables
Your hypothesis = the preferred prediction, the null hypothesis is other outcomes
