Lecture 6B Flashcards
What is the difference between a patient reported outcome measure (PROMs) and a patient reported outcome (PROs)?
Patient reported outcomes are reports on their state of health from the patient the self taken at face value without interpretation by anyone else
Patient reported outcome measures are the tools used to measure PROs and turn subjective experience into a measurement
What is quality of life (QoL) vs health related quality of life (HRQoL)
Quality of life is a multi dimensional concept that includes physical, mental, emotional and social functioning while HRQoL refers to impacts of disease and treatment processes on these
What type of PROMs are there?
Generic for use in any patient population, disease specific for a particular condition, unidimensional focussed on symptoms or domains and multidimensional related to quality of life
See lecture for examples
What are PROMs important?
Patients and clinicians may have different priorities and perspectives.
Some people may view quality of life over quantity of life or vice versa
Often disconnect between what doctor thinks and what patient is feeling
What are PROMs selection criteria?
Appropriateness
Acceptability to patients
Feasibility
Precision
Reliability
Validity
