What is a chronic illness?
Those which current medical interventions can only control but not cure. Life is forever altered
What is a long. Term condition
Condition that cannot at present be cured but is controlled by medication and treatments
What proportion of health care budget sent on long term conditions?
70%
Theories of experience of illness?
Functional- how individual interacts with society
Interpretive- how illness thought of by the individual
What is parsons sick role?
Identity sick person takes where they are absolved of normal duties because they are sick.
Limited by fact that not all illness temporary etc
Biographical work and long term illness
Can lead to loss of self and personal identity. Viewing yourself in a new light
What are Bury’s three aspects of biographical disruption?
Disruption of taken for granted behaviours
Disruption of explanatory systems
Mobilisation of resources
Burys doesnt work fro birth or for older people who see illness as normal
What is stigma?
Personal and social identity differ.
Discreditable= nothing seen but could be found out
Discredited= can be seen
