What is the biomedical model of health and illness?
Used in western medicine. Body is like a machine fixed by removing or replacing ailing part etc
What is health?
State of physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Biopsychosocial model?
Psycho- cognition, emotion and behaviour
Bio- physiology, genetics etc
Social- income, social class etc
What are the three perceptions of health?
Negative- absence of illness
Functional-being able to do things
Positive- wellbeing and fitness
Lay understanding of illness
May frame and create their own narrative to try and understand. Draw on their own experiences and what is around them
What are the three behaviours that lay beliefs influence?
Health behaviour- to prevent illness and promote health
Illness behaviour- ill person defines illness and seeks solution
Sick role behaviour- response to symptoms and seeking formal help
Socioeconomic groups view health differently?
High social class quitting smoking rational choice as healthy
Lower social class smoking rational choice as improves immediate environment coping mechanism
What influences illness behaviour?
Culture
Visibility of problems
Tolerance threshold etc
What is lay referral?
Advice sick get off lay people
What is the most important factor when evaluating how quickly medical advice is sought for a patient?
Symptom evaluation
Lay beliefs and adherence to treatment?
Deniers and distancers- refuse to accept illness
Acceptors- compliant
Pragmatists- use when needed
