Lecture 6 - The Self Flashcards
What is the self-reference effect?
Superior memory for information related to the self.
What is the self-schema?
A unified sense of self
What is self-concept?
Belief/knowledge of our personal qualities.
Sources of self-concept
- Introspection
- Own behaviour (self-perception theory)
- Other people (social comparison)
What is the actor-observer bias?
We are more likely to say that other people’s behaviour depends on their personality more than your own behaviour depends on your personality.
More variability in the interpretations of your own behaviours than for others’.
What did Wilson et al., (1982) find about the accuracy of predicting mood?
We are quite inaccurate at predicting our own mood, as well as others’ moods.
What does Wilson et al’s (1982) study tell us about having more self-knowledge?
More self-knowledge is not always sufficient in making more accurate judgements of ourselves.
