lecture 6 - part 2 of lecture 5 Flashcards
is the stomach sterile?
No the stomach does have bugs in it
what are biofilms?
contains a community of bacteria, antibiotics cannot get in
what happens if bacteria are found in a biofilm?
bacteria is protected in a biofilm form they are much more difficult to eradicate
what has been found in the sputum of CF patients?
Pseudomonas aeruginosa - a really difficult organism to get rid of.
what could the stomach act as?
as a reservoir for microbes which can then be refluxed and aspirated into the lungs
is there an aerodigestive microbiome in the CF?
YES there Is
how does COVID enter the cells?
via the ACE 2 receptor (angiotensin converting enzyme receptor protein)
what does ACE2 inhibitor effect?
it affects blood pressure - produced by the kidney
where is there high and low expression of COVID?
high in the GI tract, low in the lung epithelium
how does reflux and aspiration help COVID?
reflux and aspiration damages the lung - the damaged tissue allows COVID to access so it can affect the lungs
how was reflux identified?
it was measured by the RSI (reflux symptom index) - any level greater than 13 tells you the patient has reflux
how was salivary pepsin levels measured?
using ELISA
what did it mean if there was 76ng/ml of pepsin?
means that the patient could have an increase of developing severe COVID
what does it mean if you have COVID and reflux?
likely to end up with a bad form of COVID
