Lecture 6: Meninges Flashcards
- Cerebral vein
- Superior saggital sinus (Dural venous sinus) (all veins drain to this, then exit via int. jugular)
- Diploic vein
- Emissary vein
- Sigmoid sinus
- Inf. sagittal sinus
- Sup. sagittal sinus
- Straight sinus
- Confluence of sinuses
- Right transverse sinus
- Great cerebral vein
- Sup. petrosal sinus
- Cavernous sinus
- Occulomotor nerve
- Internal carotid art.
- Trochlear nerve
- Abducent nerve
- Opthalmic division of trigeminal nerve (V1)
- Maxillary division of trigeminal nerve (V2)
- Falx cerebri
- Falx cerebelli
- Tentorium cerebrelli
- Infundibulum
- Extradural heamatoma (damage to meningeal art.)
- Subdural heamatoma (within meningeal layer, venous in origin)
- Sub-arachnoid heamorhage (cerebral art. damage typically b/c atheromas)
What are the layers of the meninges?
- Dura mater
- Arachnoid mater
- Pia mater
What does the cranial dura mater consist of?
Periosteal layer
Meningeal layer
How does the spine differ from the cranium?
It only has the meningeal layer of the dura mater i.e no periosteal layer
What are the layers of the arachnoid mater?
- Avascular membrane
- Trabeculae
- Subarachoid space
* does not enter grooves or fissures
- Diploe with inner and outer tables
- Outer periosteal duramater
- Inner meningeal dura mater
- Arachnoid mater
- Pia mater
What is the only fissure the arachnoid mater enters?
Longitudinal fissure
The two layers of dura sperate to form what structures?
Intracranial venous structures i.e sup. saggital sinus and dural partitions i.e falx cerebri
Describe the vessels that travel within the dura mater:
Vessels travel in the outer periosteal layer of the dura.
Inc:
- Ant, Middle, Post. Accessory meningeal arteries. All are small except MMA (supplies greatest part of dura)
What does the MMA travel through to enter the skull?
Foramen spinosum, then divides into: Ant, Post, branches.
What innervates the dura mater?
V1,V2,V3 of Trigeminal nerve.
CN X
1st,2nd,and sometimes 3rd cervical nerve
