Extra details Flashcards
Describe the route of the MMA:
The middle meningeal artery branches off the maxillary artery in the pterygopalatine fossa, travels through the foramen spinosum and then along the MMA groove of the temporal bone before going past the pterion
NB gives rise to and supplies all the meninges
What is the danger space?
The danger space is the fascia space of the prevertebral layer as it extends from the base of the head to the mediastinum.
It is not the retropharyngeal sapce
What is the danger triangle?
An area of the face where laceration could result in infection travelling to the cavernous sinus through the facial vein which connects to the superior opthalmic vein and then into the cavernous sinus.
What does a patent foramen cecum mean?
Potential for infection to spread from the top of orbit / head to the brain. (connects to orbit)
Where does the trigeminal nerve run in relation to the cavernous sinus?
It runs laterally
The first potential space exists between the myohyoid and hyglossal. What does it contain?
Deep part of sub-mandibular gland. NOT SUBLINGUAL
- > Hypoglossal
- > Lingual nerve (around sub-mandibular duct) + Chorda tympani
The second potential space exists between the hyoglossus and genioglossus. What exists in it?
Sublingual artery and vein
-> Glossopharyngeal (posteriorly)
