Lecture 6 Flashcards
What is Meniges
Protective covering for the brain
What are the three layers of meninges for the brain (also the spinal cord)
Dura mater
arachnoid
Pia Mater
What is Dura Mater
The outer layer of meninges Dense and Fibrous - toughness 2 layers - outer, inner space between layers forms - venous sinuses the inner layer forms dural folds
What is the Function of Dural Folds
separate major divisions of the brain, Provide stability of brain within cranium
What are the 3 special features of the brain
- falx cerebri
- seperates cerebral hemisphere
- median plane - falx cerebri
- seperates cerebellar hemispheres
- median plane - tentorium cerebello
- seperates cerebrum from the cerebellum
- horizontal plane
What is Venous sinus
collecting veins for:
- venous blood from the brain
- Old CSF after it has cycled through the ventricular system
What is Arachnoid Mater
spider like -does not extend into suci contains blood vessels 2 special features - subarachnoid space -Arachnoid granulations
What is subarachnoid space
- between the arachnoid and pia mater
- filled with Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
What are Arachnoid granulations
Perforate the inner layer of Dura Mater
Transport old CSF from subarachnoid space into venus sinus
What is Pia Mater
inner layer of the meninges
transparent and delicate
blood vessels of arachnoid sit on top of pia mater
adheres to brain and follows gyri and extends into sulci
What is the Ventricular system
Network of interconnected spaces/ventricles within the brain
What is the function of the Ventricular system
- filled with CSF, nourishes and protects the brain
- lined with ependymal cells, circulate CSF
- CSF produced by choroid plexus
What is Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
- Surrounds the CNS
- provides support and cushion
- transports nutrients and waste
What produces CSF
produced by choroid plexus within the ventricles
How does CSF circulate
starts in the lateral ventricle
-3rd ventricle
-cerebral aqueduct
-4th ventricle
-subarachnoid space- flows around brain and spinal cord
Exit, Through arachnoid granulations into venous sinus
