grade 2 lameness
consistently lame in certain circumstances
grade 3 lameness
lame at the trot in a straight line
grade 4 lameness
lame at the walk
grade 5 lameness
non weight bearing, fracture, infected synovial structure, abscess
direction of localization for nerve block
distal to proximal
palmar digital nerve block
nerve just above collateral cartilage, blocks out back 2/3 of foot
abaxial nerve block
performed at level of fetlock, blocks out rest of 1/3 of foot
concerns when giving IV fluids
cell lysis, overwhelming kidneys, drop in blood protein - pay attention to PCV
indicators of dehydration
tacky gums, slow skin turgor, high urine specific gravity, sunken in eyes
indications for IV fluids
SQ fluids are not sterile, irritating to tissue, have higher risk for infection, symptoms may prevent oral fluids
maintenance fluid rate for adult animal and young animal
2-3ml/kg/hr, 3-4ml/kg/hr
how is fluid deficit calculated
estimating percent of dehydration, multiplying by kg and converting to L (1kg = 1L)
indicators for fluid bolus
patient is in shock or dehydrated, CRI is not possible
common bolus dosage
20ml/kg given over 15-30 mins
