What happened in 1992
Non medical prescribing was introduced. (People other than doctors could be prescribe meds)W
What happened in 1993
PGD (patient group directions) was introduced. So patients with specific health issues can be supplied/sold meds without having to see a prescriber
What happened in 1999
Prescribing ability was extended to other HCP, e.g. pharmacists, optometrist and physios
What happened in 2006
NHS regulations were amended so that trained nurses and pharmacists can prescribe any licensed med to treat any condition as ‘non-medical prescriber’
What is a non medical prescriber
An AHP (Allied healthcare professionals) who have completed a recognised prescribers course and are registered with regulatory body thus are able to prescribe
What is a supplementary supplier
Someone that prescribes medication to a patient with a long term condition according to their patient specific written clinical management plan agreed with by a doctor or a dentist.
What are the processes involved with a supplementary supplier
1) healthcare pro diagnoses patient
2) the patient agrees to have condition managed by a prescribing partnership ( SS, HP and patient)
3) creation of a clinical management plan by HP, SS and patient
4) the patient is managed within the CMP
What is an independent prescriber
A practitioner who can assess patients with diagnosed and undiagnosed conditions and can prescribe medications in order to treat conditions
What are the legal requirements of a prescriptions
- patient name
- patient address
- age if under 12
- date,
Private = date the prescription was signed
NHS = later date of the 2, the date it was signed or as indicated by the prescriber - Prescriber signature
- prescriber name and title
- prescriber address
What is the prescribing competency framework
A framework made by the RPS that is made for prescribers to follow
What are the 2 parts of the prescribe competency framework
- the consultation, it looks at the the competencies that should be demonstrated during the consultation
- prescribing governance, the competencies that should be demonstrated during the prescribing

What is scope of practice
When a pharmacist just prescribe within their own scope and be aware of the limits to their knowledge and skill.

- wants to provide better patient service
- prescribe more medicines
