What is a retail pharmacy business
A business other than a professional practice which can sell medicinal products that are not available to the public
Can a retail pharmacy business sell P or POM medicines
No unless they are
1) lawfully conducting a retail pharmacy business
2) the premises is registered to the GPhC as a pharmacy
What is retail sale
Selling/ supplying a medicine to someone for personal use
What is retail supply
Selling/ supplying a medicine to someone for personal use however against a prescription
Who can conduct a lawful pharmacy business
-A registered pharmacist that isn’t an employee or a locum.
Can a partnership run conduct a pharmacy business
Yes however both need to registered pharmacists in the UK and in Scotland on 1/2 of the partnership needs to be registered.
What does a body corporate need in order to run
A superintendent pharmacist and a responsible pharmacist
What is the responsibility of the company registrar
To ensure that companies don’t use pharmacy related names unless approved by the GPhC
What must a pharmacy be registered in order to do
- Sell P medicines
- ## sell/supply P/POM medicines against a prescription
What conditions must a registered pharmacy meet
- Meets GPhC approved standards
- pays an annual fee
- must pass the 5 inspection criteria
1) there are governance arrangements in place to
2) the staff are empowered and competent to
3) the environment and condition of the premises is able to
4) the way in which the pharmacy services and manages medicines and the medical devices allows
5)the equipment and the the facilities used to provide pharmacy care allows

What businesses do not need to be registered with the GPhC
Businesses that sell solely GSL medicines and pharmacies in a hospital
Why do hospital pharmacies register with the GPhC
So that the can
- supply P medicines
- supply P/POM medicines against a prescription
- take advantage of licensing agreements allowing them to sell, supply, manufacture and wholesale dealing of meds
What are the requirements for any premises that sells a medicine other than a GSL
Must have a responsible pharmacist that is registered with the GPhC.
Only one RP in charge at one time and they can only be responsible for one premises
3 roles of a registered pharmacist
- Ensure the safe and effective running of a pharmacy
- retail sale of medicinal products
- supply of meds (against a prescription)
- record the RP of who is the RP at any given time
What must a RP notice contain
- Their name
- their GPhC number
- the fact that they’re in charge
3 RP record requirements
- states who the RP is at a specific time (incl. any absences)
- must be done as you go not at the end of the week
- the record must be kept for 5 years
- must be available at the premises which it relates
- must be available to the GPhC.
What does the RP state
- RP name
- RP registration number
- the date and time the RP Became the RP
- the date and time the RP Stopped being the RP
- if the RP Became absent which then needs:
1) the date of absence
2)the time the RP Left the premises
3) the time the RP Came back to the premises
How long can a RP Be absent for in a whole working day?
2 hours max for the whole day for all RP
What measures must be in place before a RP can leave the premises
- if the pharmacy can continue to run safely
- remain contactable and return with promtness
- if they cannot remain contactable then they must be able to provide another pharmacists who is contract able and can arrive with promtness
When a RP Is in charge, supervising and physically present, what can be carried out
- checking prescription
- sell/supply P/POM medicines
- hand out prescriptions
- supply meds under PGD (form that allows patients to get P meds without a prescription)
- wholesale
When a RP Is in charge and supervising but is not physically present what can be carried out
Assembling medicines
When the RP Is in charge but isn’t supervising of physically present what can be carried out
- the sale of GSL meds
- process waste and accept patient return (not CDs)
What can be done when the RP Is not in charge
- order and receive stock and keep it
- date checking
- cleaning
- receive prescriptions
- respond to enquiries *Trained only
- receipt patient returns
- access PMR (medical record ) *trained only
