lecture 6 Flashcards
GDP=
Gross Domestic Product is how much a place produces in some amount of time
decoupling=
refers to breaking the link between environmental bads and economic goods. it explains this as having rates of increasing wealth greater then the rates of increasing impact
what two types of decoupling are there?
relative decoupling and absolute decoupling
relative decoupling=
refers to a decline in the ecological intensity per unit of economic output. in this situation, resource impac decline relative to the GDP, which could itself be rising.
GDP increases as environmental preassure also increases, but with a lower rate
absolute decoupling=
refers to a situation in which resources impacts decline in absolute terms. resource efficientcies must increase at least as fast as economic output and must continue to improve as the economic grows, if absolute decoupling is to occur.
GDP increases and environmental pressure decreases
how can we measure well-being?
Human development index
genuine progress indicator
happy planet index
bhutans gross national happiness
social progress index
genuine progress indicator=
attempts to account for both positive and negative economic factors, such as cost of pollution, crime and inequility. it provides a more comperehensive view on economic progress and social well-being
happy planet index=
measures the extent to which countries are able to provide long, happy, and sustainable lives for their citizens. it combines well-being, life expectency, and ecological impact into one single index
bhutans gross national happiness=
instead of focussing on economic growth, this index considers factors such as psychological well-being, community vitality, cultural diversity and environmental conversations
