Lecture 2 Flashcards
what is urban metabolism?
a model to facilitate the description and analysis of the flows of energy and material within the cities
what do urban metabolism studies help us to understand?
they help us understand what happens to resources between the point of entryng the city and the exit in the cities waste
what two types of metabolism are there?
linear metabolism and circulair metabolism
what is linear metabolism?
fast majority of resources that enter the city leave it again as solid, liquid and air worn waste
what is circulair metabolism?
re-use the waste as new resources, almost no waste and everything is being reused
what is sustainable (development)?
fufilling the needs of the current generations, without compromising the need of further generations, while ensuring a balance between economic growth, environmental care and social well-being
sociometabolism=
set of flows of materials and energy that occur between nature and society
ecosystem=
community of living organisms in conjuction with the non-living components of their environment, interacting as a system
biotic=
living
abiotic=
non-living
what approaches for assessing urban metabolism are there? (6)
material flow analysis
input-output analysis
footprints
lifecyscle assesment
simulation methods
hybrid methods
