lecture 3 Flashcards
what is the problem with the exponential growth and expansion?
we cant have more mass on the planet then the planet itself already has.
abiotic resources;
long terms cycles; stones sand etc
short term cycles; water gassesq
biotic resources;
long term cycles; decayed plants and animals
short term cycles; plants and animals
renewable sourcces=
a resourse that can be used repeatabaly and does not run out because it is natural replaced, solar power, water
non-renewable resources=
resources that can only be used once in a lifespan of a human and are limited available, gas, oil
what are impacts of non-renewable resources?
key mineral specific environmental issues
GHG increase
air and gas pollution
damage to public health
wildlife and habitat loss
water and land use
Human Development Index=
summary measurment of average achievement dimensions if human development; long and healthy life, being educated, and a decent standerd of living. it measures welfare
raw materials=
the basic materials from which a product are made
critical raw materials=
raw materials which are economically and strategically important for the european economy, but have a high risk associated with their supply. they are meassured by importance and supply risk
REE=
raw earths. set of 17 chemical elements in the perodic table. they are not essentially rare, but they tend to occur together in nature and are difficult to seperate from each other.
yales method for metals=
this method consist out of 3 dimensions; supply risk, vulnerability, and environmental implications. and is created to quantify the degree of criticality of the metals of the peroidic table. the methodology, a sustantial enhencement of the United states national research council template, is designed to help corporate, national and global stakeholders conduct risk evaluation and to inform resources utilization and strategic decision making. the methods considers life cycle impacts on human health and ecosystem health.
