Lecture 6 Flashcards
Define Experiment
a research procedure in which some factor is varied, all else is constant, and a result is measured
Independent variable
directly manipulated by researcher
Dependent variable
measured by researcher
Situational variables
type of manipulated IV in which subjects encounter different environmental circumstances
Task variables
type of manipulated IV in which subjects are given different tasks
Instructional variables
Type of manipulated IV in which subjects are given different instructions about how to perform
Subject variables
Type of non-manipulated IV that is an existing attribute of the individuals chosen for the study
Extraneous variable
uncontrolled factor not of interest that could impact results
Confound
Extraneous variable that could provide an alternate explanation for results
Statistical conclusion validity
when researcher uses statistical analysis properly
External validity
when a study can generalize to the real world
Internal validity
when a study is free from methodological flaws, especially confounds
