Lecture 5 Flashcards
Define Reliability
The extent to which measures of the same phenomenon are consistent and repeatable
Observed score =
true score + measurement error
Test-retest reliability
similarity between the results of successive measurements of the same measure under the same conditions
Define Validity
The extent to which a measure truly measures something
Define content validity
whether or not the actual content of the items on a test make sense in terms of the construct being measured
‘Face’ Validity
Whether the measure seems valid to those who are taking it
Criterion Validity
Whether the measure is related to some outcome that has been established by prior research
Construct Validity
when the measure is being used accurately assesses the construct (and when that construct is valid)
Convergent validity
When scores on a test designed to measure a construct are correlated
Discriminant Validity
Occurs when scores on a test are unrelated
Social Desirability Scales
Part of tests, used to detect lying
Nominal Scales
Yes/no, favourite colour, etc
Ordinal scales
Ranking scale
Interval scales
Temperature, etc, zero means nothing
Ratio scales
Heart rate, kelvin scale, age, money, zero indicate absence
