lecture 5 - head & neck 5 Flashcards
Which bones form the orbit?
lesser wing of sphenoid, frontal bone, ethmoid bone, maxilla, lacrimal bone, zygomatic bone
Where is the apex of the orbit?
At the optic canal
What is the anatomical term for eyelids?
Palpebrae
What covers the internal surface of the palpebrae?
Conjuctiva
How are tears drained from the eye to the nasal cavity?
collected by puncta, lacrimal canaliculi, lacrimal sac, nasolacrimal duct to nasal cavity
What are the fibrous tissue bands that strengthen the palpebrae?
Tarsal plates
How are the palpebrae joined to the lateral and medial margins of the orbit?
Via medial and lateral palpebral ligaments
What nerve gives parasympathetic supply to the lacrimal gland for secretion?
Greater petrosal nerve (CNVII), which runs with the lacrimal nerve
Which muscle elevates the upper eyelid?
Levator palpebrae superioris
Where is the common attachment of the rectus muscles?
The tendinous ring in the apex of the orbit
Which muscle passes through the trochlea before attaching to the eye?
Superior oblique
Which muscles allow for upwards movement of the eye?
superior rectus, inferior oblique
Which muscles allow for upwards and inwards movement of the eye?
superior rectus
Which muscles allow for upwards and outwards movement of the eye?
inferior oblique
Which muscles allow for downwards movement of the eye?
inferior rectus, superior oblique
Which muscles allow for downwards and inwards movement of the eye?
inferior rectus
Which muscles allow for downwards and outwards movement of the eye?
superior oblique
Which muscles allow for inwards movement of the eye?
medial rectus
Which muscles allow for outwards movement of the eye?
lateral rectus
Which nerves in the orbit dilate the pupils?
Long ciliary nerves
What is the function of the cliliary ganglion?
relay station for parasympathetic fibres of the oculomotor nerve
Which nerve supplies sensation to the auricle?
V3 (auriculotemporal nerve)
Which bone surrounds the internal structures of the ear?
Petrous temporal bone
What is the anatomical name for ear wax?
Cerumen
Which glands secrete ear wax?
Ceruminous and sebaceous glands in the external ear
What is the collective name for the bones of the inner ear?
ossicles
What are the names for the 3 ossicles?
Malleus, incus, stapes
Where does the footplate of stapes communicate with?
The oval window
What are the 2 muscles of the middle ear?
Tensor tympani, stapedius
What nerve supplies tensor tympani?
V3 / mandibular nerve
What nerve supplies stapedius?
facial nerve / VII
What is the function of stapedius muscle?
Dampens excessive movement from loud noises
What is the bony labyrinth?
A very dense part of the petrous temporal bone which contains the vestibule
