Characteristics of Urbans Rail Vehicles
- Operating in the city center and suburbs
- Low driving speed - High acceleration
- Small interval between trains
- Short distances between stops
- High transport capacity
Freight trains
Max length: 740m, Max. axle load 22.5 t. In Germany there are a lot of bridges so the dimensions are limited.
Axle load
The axle load of a wheeled Rail is the total weight felt by all wheels connected to a given axle. Viewed another way, it is the fraction of total Train weight resting on a given axle
Urban Rail vehicles
Tram, Urban Light Rail, Subway/Metro, Tram-train
Tram
Train of maximum speed of 50-70 km/h (in Germany) with an average velocity of 15-20 km/h. Train protection is visually and the distance between stops is 300m - 600 m. Track: mainly in road bed
Urban light rail
Train of maximum speed of 70-80 km/h (in Germany) with an average velocity of 20-30 km/h. Train protection is visually/signaling and the distance between stops is 500m - 800 m. Track: mainly reserved track
Subway/Metro
Train of maximum speed of 70-100 km/h (in Germany) with an average velocity of 25-40 km/h. Train protection is signaling and the distance between stops is 500m - 1000 m. Track: exclusively reserved track
Tram-Train / 2 System vehicles
Train of maximum speed of 80-100 km/h (in Germany) with an average velocity of 15-60 km/h. Train protection is visually/signaling and the distance between stops is 300m – 10 km. Track: street track / reserved track / mainline track
Vehicle Classification acc. to Floor level:
• High-Floor vehicle: 600 mm < Floor height < 1000 mm
• Semi-low-floor vehicle: 350 mm < Floor height < 600 mm
• Low-floor vehicle: 350 mm > Floor height
300 mm > boarding height
Structure Gauge
Also known as minimum clearance outline, is a defined envelope, which is mostly determined for the transverse vertical plane of a railway track. On the one hand, it establishes the space along the railway that must be kept clear of objects, and on the other hand, it serves as design requirement for dimensioning vehicles intended for said railway.
