How does depression present differently in women vs. men vs. children?
In women, depression effects mood more (crying, staying in bed etc.) Children: clingy Men: short fuse, get angry
Name the seven diagnostic criteria for depression.
- Sad or low mood.
- Loss of interest in stuff you like to do
- Sleep issues
- Eating less
- Psychometer Agitation or Retardation
- Fatigue
- Worthlessness
- Suicidal thoughts
How many do you need to be classified?
Must have 1 of first 2; you need 5 out of 9
What can you do to protect yourself against depression?
- Strong support system
- Be in good shape
- Having active coping strategies
What is the difference between active and passive coping strategies?
Active coping is actually doing something about depression (get fired, go get a job; break up , but still go out. Passive is when you just ruminate over it. Women tend to have passive coping while men have active.
Exogenous
Starts from something on outside (bad break up etc.)
Endogenous
Something inside of you (neurotransmitter)
