What is a mood disorder?
a syndrome in which a disturbance in mood is the predominant feature
Depression
A mood that is abnormally low
Major Depressive Disorder
A persistent sad mood that is so sever that impairs a person’s ability to engage

Dysthymia vs. Major Depression
Chronic state of depression. The symptoms are the same as major depression but less severe. IT IS THE CONSISTENT PERSISTENCE OF DEPRESSED MOOD
Bipolar Disorder
Happens when both episodic depressed mood and episodic mania are present. Consists of dramatic shifts in mood. Commonly categorized as bipolar 1 or bipolar 2 (AKA: Manic Depressive Disorder)
What’s the difference between bipolar 1 and 2?
The degree of mania
Hypomania
A mood elevation that is clearly abnormal but not severe enough to impair funtioning or put you in the hospital
Mixed State
a state characterized by symptoms of mania and depression that occur at the same time
Cyclothymic Disorder
characterized by fluctuations that alternate between hypomanic and depressive symptoms.
