Peter Drucker’s assumption
Management is doing things right, and leadership is doing the right thing. But, they also overlap and complement each other.
Leader
Someone who can influence others and who has managerial authority
Values, Mission, Vision
Values = core beliefs
Mission = statement of business purpose
Vision = shared mental image of a desired future state
Leaders > communicate vision
Motivating in entrepreneurial organisations
- Equality: everyone should be paid equally
- Equity: pay based on performance
- Long-term vs Short-term: account for failure and ambitious long-term goals with realistic short-term targets
Lewin’s Leadership Framework
- Laissez-fair
- Democratic
- Autocratic
Laissez-fair
Leader let the group make decisions and complete the work whatever way it sees fit
Democratic
Leader involves employees in decision making, delegates authority and uses feedback for coaching
Autocratic
Leader dictates work methods, makes unilateral decisions and limits employee participation

4 stages of development
- Unable and unwilling: not competent nor confident
- Unable and willing: motivated but not competent
- Able and unwilling: competent but don’t want to)

Leadership paradigms
- Transactional leaders: lead primarily by using social exchanges
- Transformational leaders: change and transform individuals
Managers vs Leaders
First pillar of the Organizational architecture
- Managers: administrative level. Set up milestones and make sure employees do their work.
- Leaders: also strategic level and they set the mission and vision of the company
Entrepreneurial leadership
Entrepreneurs are patient leaders, capable of instilling tangible visions and managing for the long haul. The entrepreneur is at once a learner and a teacher, a doer and a visionary.
Motivation
Motivation, where high-level cognitive skills are needed, comes primarily from:
1. Purpose
2. Autonomy
3. Mastery
