Lecture 5 Flashcards
what is a species
it can be populations that interbreed to produce fertile offspring
what are reproductive barrier
they inhibit gene flow between populations allowing evolutionary divergence, it occurs because alleles change
what are the prezygotic barriers
Habitat isolation(live near on one) temporal isolation(different mating time) behavioural isolation(different courting calls) mechanical isolation(they dont fit) gametic isolation(gametes wont match)`
what are postzygotic barriers
hybrid inviability(no chance of survival ) hybrid infertility (no kids) and hybrid breakdown
what is allopatric speciation
Geographic barrier blocks gene flow between populations
what is sympatric speciation
new species arise within range of the parent population
