Q

What did Elie Metchnikoff hypothesise?

A

Seeding the gut with healthy bacteria by drinking fermented milk products could fight off harmful bacteria and prolong life, modifying the gut microbiome to replace bad bacteria with good bacteria

Q

How does delivery mode influence microbiome composition?

A

Vaginal birth: infant inoculated with vaginal microbiota; larger population of Bacteroidetes than Firmicutes compared to caesarean section
Caesarean section: infant inoculated with skin microbiota

16
Q

What does dysbiosis result in?

A

Intestinal permeability
Immune dysregulation
Potential for GIT disorders
Potential for increase risk of Clostridium difficile infections

17
Q

What is Faecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT)?

A

Treatment used when standard therapies fail to help with diarrhoea caused by Clostridium difficile
Treatment involves transfer of healthy bacteria (through a processed mixture of liquid stool) from a donor into the intestine of the patient

18
Q

Is there a link between obesity and the microbiome?

A

Yes
