Q

Explain how encoding strategies can enhance rate

A

• . generate msg w combo of symbols/hits = produce a longer utterance
• For clients who can’t handle moving around layers, MinSpeak lets you stay on one page
• If you know the system well can generate anything
• Rate enhancement because less hits gives you more
• person can figure out which pattern to use
(tapping into a motor memory )

16
Q

How do word an msg codes enhance rate?

A

Rate enhancement because use faster short forms (thx, wyn)

17
Q

what is letter, word, phrase and topic prediction (rate enhancement techniques)

A

letter: system based on spelling rules of language system
word: System offers most likely word option based on first letters
phrase: specific sentences presented using basic grammatical rules (i.e. “how”- presents lists of how Qs)
topic: once a topic is chosen vocab related to that topic is presented

18
Q

What is linguistic/grammatical prediction (rate enhancement)

A

uses rules of english to predict next ending or word (i.e. “go”, system offers “ing” and “to)

19
Q

preprogrammed senteces

A

Entire msg pre programmed (i.e pic of dog = this is my dog chuckles)

20
Q

What skills does the user need for rate enhancement technique: word/msg codes

A

memory and literacy
 Could compensate for memory with visual acuity and reading and then transfer the task
 Need to be able to read
 Need to transfer task between on the phone – listen – find response (multi-task)

21
Q

What skills does the user need for rate enhancement technique: iconic ecoding

A

Iconic ending (e.g. MinSpeak): memory, motor control & planning abilities (need enough motor consistency), strong cognitive level to understand different combinations, vision

22
Q

What skills does the user need for rate enhancement technique: pre-programmed msgs

A

Memory

Strategic competencies, knowing when is appropriate
