Lecture 4 - Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Flashcards
What is COPD?
Coronary obstructive pulmonary disease
What are the characteristics of some with COPD?
Raised shoulders and a low bmi
What is chronic bronchitis?
Chronic or recurrent excessive mucus secretion in the bronchial tree
What can chronic bronchitis lead to?
A decrease in the luminal diameter of the airways
What can you see on a ct scan with chronic bronchitis?
Mucus plugging
What goes together with chronic bronchitis?
Airflow limitations
What is emphysema?
An increase in the size of bronchioles with destruction of their walls (destruction of the alveoli)
How does emphysema cause airway construction?
By inflammation and narrowing of the airways (air way remodelling)
What happens if there are holes in the lungs?
Can take away perfusion and ventilation
What can affect gas transfer?
Emphysema
What are the characteristics of airway obstruction?
Reduced FEV1 and FEV/FVC ratio
What do small airways not have?
Cartilage
What are small airways kept open by?
By the structures of the alveoli surrounding them
What does emphysema cause?
Airway obstruction
What is airway constriction?
Narrowing of airways
