Lecture 4 - Biological Classification Flashcards
linnaean hierarchy
Carolus Linnaeus (father of taxonomy)
biological classification
lower level taxa are nested in higher level taxa (kingdom phylum etc)
The 5 Kingdom System of Linnaean Hierarchy
All organisms are either
Monera, Protista, Plantae, Fungi, Animalia
3 domain 6 kindgom system
Domains: Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya
Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animailia fit under Eukarya
Phylogenetic taxonomy
rankless system that reflects evolutionary relationships better
(monophyletic groupings)
Linnaean Hierarchy of dinosaurs
Kingdom Animalia
Phylum Chordata
Class Reptilia
Order (it will diverge from here on out)
Linnaean Hierarchy of human
Kingdom Animalia
Phylum Chordata
