Lecture #4 Flashcards
How were eukaryotic cells formed?
Heterotrophic prokaryotes entered another cell as undigested prey or parasite, then cell became endosymbiotic
How were autotrophic eukaryotes formed?
Some early eukaryotic heterotrophs engulfed a photosynthetic prokaryote which evolved into a chloroplast
Where are protists found?
Anywhere there is water (moist terrestrial habitats)
What is an endosymbiont?
organism that lives within or on another organism
How do autotrophs get their nutrition?
Through photosynthesis
Where do heterotrophs get their nutrition?
By eating bacteria and other protists
What is a parasite?
A heterotroph that gets it nutrition from a living host
What is a mixotroph?
Can be heterotrophic or autotrophic ( can be either)
What are some examples of protists
Ciliates, ameobazons, amoebas, diatoms, flagellates, dinoflagellates, etc
What are some examples of multi cellular protist?
Red, green and brown algae
What do ciliates use their cilia for?
To move and to sweep food into an oral groove with cilia
Are cilia heterotrophs or mixotrophs?
Both
What two ways do ciliates reproduce?
Asexually and conjunction
Where do free living amoebas/ amoebazoans live?
Rocks, sticks or mud bottoms (Fresh water)
How do amoebas feed and move?
Via pseudopodia
