Lecture 4 Flashcards
Which circulatory system type has increased BP and control of blood distribution?
Closed systems
Describe the pathway of blood in a fish
Oxygenated blood from gills goes to systemic tissues, returns deoxygenated, pumps to heart, then to the gills to become oxygenated
What are some features of a fishes circulatory system
Series of chambers, no coronary vessels, spongy myocardium in ventricle
What did lungfish evolve their lung from?
swim bladder
What two seperated circuits do mammals and birds have?
Pulmonary and systemic
Is the pressure low or high in the pulmonary circuit? the systemic?
Low pressure pulmonary, high pressure systemic
What are some features of molluscs circulatory systems?
Have contractile organ and some bloof vessels, most have open systems except cephalopods (squid, ocotpus, cuttlefish)
What is hemolymph
fluid in an open system, includes fluid in vessels and interstitial fluid
What is lacunae?
minute spaces between nonvascular cells that serve as passageways for blood flow
What are sinuses?
Large spaces between nonvascular cells that serve as passageways for blood flow
What are ostia?
slits in wall of heart
What is pericardial sinus
Fluid filled cavity surrounding heart
What is hemocoel
phrase used to describe sinuses together in open system
How does blood return to heart in open system?
Blood drains through sinuses and lacunae instead of pumping?
Insect circulation is only used for hormones, nutrients and transport because….
they dont need blood/hemolymph for gas exchange
