Lecture 3.2: Energy Production from Lipids Flashcards
Brown Adipose Tissue
Found in newborns and infants
To keep heat around vital organs
What are lipids?
Generally insoluble in water (hydrophobic)
Most contain only C, H and some O
More ‘reduced’ than carbohydrates so they:
– release more energy when oxidised
– complete oxidation requires more O2
Classes of Lipids (3)
Fatty acid derivatives
Hydroxy-methyl-glutaric acid (HMG) derivatives (C6 compound)
Vitamins
Classes of Lipids: Fatty acid derivatives
Fatty Acids
Triacylglycerols (Triglycerides)
Phospholipids
Eicosanoids
Classes of Lipids: Hydroxy-methyl-glutaric acid (HMG) derivatives
Ketone Bodies (C4): hydrophilic
Cholesterol (C27)
Cholesterol Esters
Bile Acids and Salts (C24)
