Lecture 3- What are cells Flashcards
Cell theory
Organisms are made up of one or more cells
The cell is the basic unit of organisms
Cells arise from preexisting cells
One misconception about cells is that organelles are drawn too large and too few. Why is that?
It is drawn too large to see it clearly and there are a lot of cells that’s why only a few are drawn
Why are cells drawn with empty space?
So that you can see the different organelles separate from one another
Can import of nutrients to cells use both flagellum and microvilli?
No, cells can only have either a flagellum or microvilli
Flagella
Purpose: propulsion
it can move up or down
sperm cells have flagella
Microvilli
Purpose: increase surface area
more surface area= more nutrients they can import
Intestinal epithelial cells have microvilli - they bring nutrients into the body
Can cells move?
Yes, most cells can move
what is the connecting material between two neighboring animal cells?
Collagen (protein)
What is the connecting material between two neighboring plant cells?
Cellulose (polysaccharide)
Going from single cell to multicellular require some material to connect neighboring cells together.
True or False
True
Humans have 200 different types of cells in five categories
What are the 5 categories?
- epithelial tissue (intestinal epithelial cells)
- nervous tissue ( motor neurons)
- muscle tissue (skeletal muscle cells)
- connective tissue (osteoblasts)
- blood cells (RBCs)
Cells have different shapes and functions
True or False
True
Cells have common scientific names

examples:
RBS - Erythrocyte
Liver cell- Hepatocyte
