What’s the self?
Our beliefs, preferences, actions, experiences, etc.
Social self?
Interactions with others define our social self
Looking glass self?
Seeing ourselves as WE think others see us
Self knowledge?
Everything we know about ourselves and our characteristics- intelligent, beautiful, psychosis student, etc.
Self perception theory
Defining ourselves through our actions (“we’re what we do”)
Behaviours lead to self-definition
Over justification effect
Becoming less intrinsically motivated when offered a reward
Social Comparison Theory
We compare ourselves to others to chek our progress, because there isn’t objective measure for some attributes and for valiadtion of similar others (how groups are formed)
What’s self esteem?
How we perceive and value ourselves
Types of self-esteem
Global - the overall opinion of oneself at any time(positive or negative)
Domain speicfic self-esteem - paticular area self esteem (sports, academic,etc)
Trait self- esteem - lifelong accumulated perception of social inclusion and exclusion
State self-esteem - A perception of chnages in levels of socia inclusion
