Discimination and Prejudice Flashcards
Prejudice?
Negative feeling towards a memeber of a group because of their membership (example prejudice towards Eastern Europeans)
Stereotype?
Fixed, over-generalised belief about another group of people
Discrimination?
Actions taken which have a negative impact on an individual or a group
Traditional discrimination
Begins with traditional prejudice and discrimination that is consciously aknoledged and openly expressed by an individual and/or supported by a governmental law
Modern prejudice - Migroagressions
Daily verbal. behavioural or enviornmental abuse intentional or not expressing negativism towards a minority
Internalised Racism
Clark & Clark, 1947 - black children prefer to play with white dolls (and white dolls were preferred by both white and balck children)
Social Identity Theory
Argues that we have a social and personal identity. Social identity stems from group membership. We gain self-esteem from group membership
Motivational approach
When our self-esteem is low, we restore through lifting up the groups we belong to and treat badly the groups we don’t belong to
Socio-cognitive approach
(Fiske & Taylor, 1991) - we rely on heuristics(learning something by yourself) - mental short cuts to navigate the world
Categorisation - saves mental effort and reduces cognitive load but not always accurate
Consequences of cognitive classification
Out-group homogeneity effect (thinking your in-group is diverse and out-groups’ members are all the same)
Illusory correlations (connecting two events when there’s no correlation)
