Affect - emotional reaction
Cognition- beliefs, thoughts
Behaviour - reactions
Cognitive dissonance?(Festinger,1954)
Difference between thoughts and behaviour
cog. dissonance can influence attitudes
self_ perception - observing our behaviour and noticing our attitudes
Katz’s theory of attitudes(1960)
Aadaptive or Instrumental- attainment or avoidance of goals
Knowledge- explain and predict the environment
Value expressive - one’s identity
Ego defence - protecting from possible harm
How are attitudes formed?
Through classical conditioning (Olson & Fazio, 2011)
Operant conditioning (Hildum & Brown, 1956)
Mere exposure- the more familiar thing
Attitude Change
Central route- cognitive processing where we question the given information
Peripheral route - superficial processing of information
Elaboration Likelihood Model
Model of persuasion describing the change of attitudes ( depends on personal relevance, need for cognition, distraction, prior knowledge and personality traits) ( Petty & Wegener, 1999)
Depends on how strong the arguments are , if they’re long, if they’re lateral or bilateral , need for closure (Pierro et al., 2004)
