Lecture 3: Soil Architecture and Physical Properties Flashcards
How to describe physical properties of soil?
-Color
-Texture
-Structure
-Density
What is used to describe the color of a soil?
-Hue
-Value
-Chroma
Hue
redness/ yellowness
Value
lightness or darkness (0=black)
Chroma
intensity/brightness (0=neutral grey)
What influences the color of soil?
-soil organic matter (SOM) content
-water content
-oxidation state of iron and manganese
What is soil texture?
the particle size of soil
Sand size
<2.0mm to > or = to 0.05
Silt size
<0.05mm to > or = to 0.02mm (= > or = to 2um)
Clay size
<0.002mm (= < 2 um)
Sand
-visible to the eye
-gritty
*well aerated and loose, but infertile and prone to drought
Silt
-flour like feel
-low plasticity and stickiness
*fertile, but susceptible to wind and water erosion
Clay
-tends to remain in suspension
-rich in nutrients
-very high water capacity
*properties vary with type and amount of clay present
Feel method clay
flexible, smooth, and shiny
Feel method silt loam
crumbly, smooth, and dull
Feel method sandy loam
chunky and gritty
What is soil structure?
Soil structure is the arrangement of the soil particles
What factors contribute to the formation and destruction of aggregates?
-di and trivalent cations (eg. Ca 2+, Fe 3+, Al 3+)
-bacteria because they tend to make biofilms
-iron and aluminum sesquioxides
-tillage (bad for aggregates)
