Lecture 3: Rangeland Types Flashcards
Types of vegetation
Grasses, Forbes, shrubs, trees
Range site/ ecosite
A localized, mappable area of relative uniform physical conditions. This is general sites, NOT plants
Plant community
A localized, mappable stand of relatively uniform vegetation
Range type
Plant community type. A hypothetical/artificial plant community representing many similar plant communities in reality, grouped for convenience. Localized, mappable stand of relatively uniform vegetation in composition, structure, and productivity.
Tall grass prairie
500-1000mm precipitation
Coastal prairie
Can get up to 1500mm precipitation, this is near Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, and the barrier islands. Sod forming grasses
Mixed or short grass prairie
250-800mm precipitation
Fescue prairie
240-360 mm precipitation. Colder than short grass.
Palouse prairie
200-650 mm precipitation, the higher being in Washington state. More sage brush and wheatgrass
Pacific prairie
200-500 mm in the south, 1250mm in the north
Desert plains
250mm, very low precipitation. These are deserts.
Phytosocialogy
Where one area starts and another one ends. Suitable where there are high levels of homogeneity. The presence or absence of different plants.
