Florence Nightengale
- founder of modern nursing
- ## dramatically reduced mortality and morbidity rates with simple nursing care (sanitation, environmental conditions)
The Nightingale Model of Nursing
became the standard model of nursing education around the world
- involved a hospital-based school overseen by staff members who operated as educators
- student nurses provided the bulk of patient care
Baccalaureate as Entry-to-Practice (BETP)
Prior to BETP, nursing students were taught by both trained and untrained hospital workers
1975 - all new nursing graduates were required to be educated at the baccalaureate level –> followed by all provinces except quebec
Canadian Association for Schools of Nursing (CASN)
standards for nursing education are monitored by the Canadian Association for Schools of Nursing (ASN) to ensure that educational programs are of appropriate quality and that they respond to changes in health care
The CASN’s National Nursing Education Framework describes the expectations for nursing education
International Council of Nurses (ICN)
a federation of more than 130 national nurses associations, representing more than 20 million nurses worldwide
influences nursing, health and social policy, professional and socio-economic standards worldwide
Canadian Nurses Association (CNA)
the national voice of registered nurses in Canada
- provide direction that advances the nursing profession to improve health outcomes
- developed the Code of Ethics
- Administer CNA Certification Programs
College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
registration process in Ontario for licensure and registration of nurses
- identify a nurses’ scope of practice
- protect the title of nurse
- protect the public against unqualified, incompetent practice
