Lecture 3: Nervous System Review Flashcards
What is a mixed spinal nerve?
a nerve consisting of both motor and sensory axons
What is a peripheral nerve?
a nerve that is often comprised of multiple spinal nerves, i.e. several spinal segments contribute axons to a single peripheral nerve
Why are nerve plexuses important?
even if there is damage to one part of the nerve plexus, innervation will not be lost
What are the basal ganglia?
collection of grey matter (nuclei) located within the white matter of the cerebrum
includes several nuclei in diencephalon and brainstem
What is Parkinson’s disease?
loss of dopaminergic control of the basal ganglia leading to a “hypokinetic disorder”
can be corrected by deep brain stimulation of basal ganglia control systems
What is the cause of Parkinson’s disease?
degenerative changes in globus pallidus and substantia nigra -> marked reduction in dopamine
