Lecture 3: Journey To The Centre Of The Earth Flashcards
When/who was the first person in space?
Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin on April 12, 1961
When/who was the first person on the moon?
Neil Armstrong on July 20, 1969
Interstellar space is a _____
Vacuum
The Oort Cloud
Starts at 3500 AU and is populated by specks, flakes, and balls of ice (which are made from water, carbon dioxide, ammonia, and methane ice).
What is space ice?
Ice made from water, carbon dioxide, ammonia, and methane ice
Heliosphere
Edge of the solar system and is where the outer reach of solar winds (charged particles from the Sun)
Kuiper belt
a collection of icy objects, including the dwarf planets Pluto and Eris, and Neptune’s orbit
1 AU represents
Distance between earth and sun
Distance between earth and sun
150m km
Journey from interstellar space to Neptune
50000AU Sun’s gravity
3500AU Oort Cloud
200 AU Heliosphere
55-30AU Kuiper Belt
Comets
Comets expel gas and dust as they warm approaching the Sun. Comets are made of water, carbon dioxide, ammonium, and methane, other compounds, and rock dust. Comet “tails,” always point away from the sun, regardless of the direction of comet motion.
What is known as a dirty snowball?
Comets
What do asteroids and comets share in common?
They are both Solar System materials that escaped from being incorporated into planetesimals
Meteorite
Fragments of asteroids and comets that STRIKE the earth
Where does asteroid ida reside?
In the asteroid belt between mars and Jupiter
Interplanetary space vs interstellar space
Interplanetary space is more denser than interstellar space
Asteroid belt
Is between mars’ and Jupiter’s orbits, asteroids that border Jupiter’s orbit are called Trojans or Greeks, and asteroids on the main belt are called hildas
Terrestrial Planets differ from each other in terms of:
Size Atmosphere Surface features Form(structure) and Presence of water
Earth’s magnetic field
11-12
Auroras
13
Earth’s atmosphere
14-16
What are the earth systems that make up the the earth?
Atmosphere Hydrosphere Cryosphere Biosphere Lithosphere
What is unique about earth in terms of water from other planets?
It’s the only planet that has liquid water (a hydrosphere)
Habitable zone
Also known as Goldilocks zone that lies between 0.8 and 2.5 AU
What about an atmosphere makes it livable?
Some atmosphere trap heat, some do not have mechanism to conserve heat (extreme temp)
Topography
is the study of the shape and features of land surfaces
Bathymetry
the measurement of depth of water in oceans, seas, or lakes
Hypsometric curve
shows the proportion of Earth’s solid surface at different elevations.
Earth’s surface is mostly:
continent (plains and shelf) or ocean floor. Mountains and deep trenches are rare
Maximum difference of mountains and deep trenches are =
19.8km.
