Lecture 3 - HAZID Flashcards

1
Q

Hazard Identification vs HAZID

A

Routine Hazard identification
* An every-day routine process you do mindfully at work and outside of work
* Examples include Take 5’s, Job Hazard analysis ….
* This is not part of Engineering Risk assessment and not discussed further this week

vs

HAZID
* A structured process undertaken at the early stages of engineering design of complex systems as part of a preliminary risk assessment.
* This is one of the Engineering Risk Assessment processes we mentioned in the first PW session this week.

Q

How can hazards be identified?

A
  • After agreeing on the Scope the next step is to decompose into dimensions.
  • HAZID Dimensions include are there hazards in
  • specific phases of the work,
  • associated with specific activities,
  • arising from specific event scenarios,
  • to do with specific areas where work is planned,
  • specific systems, and
  • processes and management systems. (See examples on next slide)
  • Within each dimension we need to identify abnormal events or conditions that could, if not correctly and promptly responded to, result in hazard exposure.
  • Then we identify the sources of hazard and barriers around these hazards. Guide words can be used to ensure common sources and events are identified.
  • We also identify events that can lead to direct threat to the integrity of the barriers.
