Lecture 3 - Antisocial Behaviour: Sex Discrimination Flashcards
How is sex discrimination defined?
Any negative behaviours that are directed at an individual based on their gender -> subtle and blatant.
What is the glass ceiling effect?
An invisible barrier that stops women from progressing into higher managerial positions, creating a wage gap. Still present when controlling for experience and education.
How might Social Identity play a role in sex discrimination?
Men are in charge of promotion, and they will find intragroup similarities and play into stereotypes of men being leaders.
How might sex-role stereotypes influence sex discrimination?
Incongruity between the stereotypes of a leader and a female, resulting in less favourable evaluation of female leaders. Masculinity and leadership are more commonly associated, and both of these results are supported by IAT.
What is the glass cliff phenomenon?
Selection bias, where in times of crisis men are seen as natural leaders (saviour effect) while women are more associated with stereotypes. Men are subsequently given more opportunities to save the company from crisis than women, and are subsequently more praised. Women are slowly ‘pushed off the cliff.’
