Lecture 3 Flashcards
Three parts to ectoparasite control
- Kill adults on pet with parasiticides
- Prevent life cycle progression on the pet with IGRs
- Control for adults and babies in the environment
What do parasiticides target
Axon (Na, GABA, glutamate, Cl)
Synapse (Ca, acetylcholine, acetycholinesterase)
Which parasiticides attack the axon
Pyrethrins/pyrethroids
Metaflumizone/indoxacarb
Macrocyclic lactones
Fipronil
Which parasiticides attack the synapse
Organophosphates/ carbamates
Spinosad/ spinoteram
Imidacloprid/ nitepyran/ dinotefuran
Amitraz
What does pyrethrins do
Increase Na permeability on axon
Good and bad of pyrethrins?
Good- safe for cats and puppies
Bad- UV inactivated, short acting
What do pyrethroids do
Increase Na on axon
Good and bad of pyrethroids
Good- binds well, photostable, lasts longer than pyrethrin, repels if greater than 2%
Bad- toxic to cats!! (Greater than 0.5% is bad)
Which vet products have permethrin
Advantix II
Actvivyl plus (plus indoxacarb)
Vectra 3D
What is detamethrin
Pyrethroid
Collar
Can cause local irritation
What does indoxacarb do
Blocks Na at axons
Uses metabolic bioactivation in the flea
What does fipronil do
Inhibits GABA
What product contains fipronil?
Good and bad about it?
Frontline
Good- IGR and adulticide, safe in cats
Bad- does not repel
What is effitix
Has fipronil and permethrin
What is tritak
Dogs- has fipronil, cypehnothrin, and methoprene
Cats- fipronil, etofenprox, and methoprene
What is bravecto
Fluralaner
Inhibits arthropod GABA
Effective for demodex
Also topical
