Lecture 3 Flashcards
Five classes of fish
Agnatha - no jaw Acanthodii ** spiny sharks Placodermi ** big fuckers Chondrichthyes - cartilaginous Osteichthyes - bony fish
Agnatha characteristics
Oldest known vertebrates
Lacked jaws and paired appendages
Hagfish
Pteraspis
Aconthodian characteristics
First fish with jaws and paired spines
Placodermi characteristics
Heavily armored
Paired pectoral and pelvic fin
30 feet fucking monsters
Coccosteus
Chondrichthyes characteristics
Modern day sharks, skates, Rays
Skeleton made entirely out of cartilage
Large-yolked eggs
Double nostrils - claspers on pelvic fin for getting it on
Osteichthyes characteristics
Sarcopterygii- internal fin skeleton is cartilage or bone
Actinopterygii- internal fin skeleton is made of spines
Ostracoderms vs. Cyclostomata
Shared:
Both lack jaws and paired appendages
Use nasal openings for smelling
Cyclostomata have 1 nostril, ostracoderms 2
Ostracoderms use pharyngeal pump to replace ciliary
Cyclostomata have Gills in pouches where filter feeding and gas exchange occurs
Three major development of gnathostomes that set them apart form other fishes
Development of jaws
Paired appendages
Buoyancy mechanism
List the major anatomical characteristics that separates sarcopterygii and from actinopterygii
Lobed pair fins vs Ray fins
Bone and cartilage vs spines
Period where Paleozoic fishes first appeared
Devonian
