Lecture 3 Flashcards
What is the difference between rectilinear and curvilinear movements?
RL- all points move in straight line with no change in direction or orientation, and all points move the same distance.
CL- all points move so the orientation of the object does not change and all points move the same distance, but the direction changes.
What do most movements consist of?
A combination of translational and rotational movements.
What is the difference between distance and displacement?
Distance is the length of the actual motion and is scalar and Displacement is a change in position, measured as a straight line from initial position to final position.
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Speed is the distance covered over a period of time and is a scalar quantity and velocity is the change in position over a period of time and is a vector quantity.
How do you determine if velocity is positive, negative or zero from a graph?
Start at the left most tip and follow it- goes up (+) , goes down (-) and no difference = (0).
How do you calculate instantaneous velocity?
Take the time and distance before and after the time in question.
