Lecture 1 Flashcards
What is biomechanics?
Applies physics to the different movements of biological organisms.
What is the definition of mechanics?
Analysis of forces and their effect on movement.
What are the two main areas of biomechanics?
1) performance improvement.
2) injury prevention and rehabilitation.
Describe a qualitative approach to biomechanics.
Without the use of numbers: relies of senses.
1) Visual: looking for obvious errors in movement.
2) Auditory: additional cues based on sound of movement.
3) Haptic: sense of touch: can come from performer or coach assessing in movement.
When is the qualitative approach mostly used?
For novice athletes.
What are some drawbacks and pros to a qualitative approach?
Is subjective and often comparative.
Cheap because you don’t need special equipment.
Describe the quantitative approach to biomechanics.
- Uses numbers
- Objective: through measurements people tend to reach the same conclusions.
- usually used for elite athletes as they make minor, less obvious errors.
- more expensive equipment.
Is quantitative better than qualitative?
No! Both are detailed, it just depends on context.
What is important to remember for BEDMAS?
Must also read left to right.
What is the trig saying to remember?
SOHCAHTOA
